Therapy Intensives Process
-
We will begin with a brief 15-minute phone consultation to meet each other and answer any questions you may have. At this time we will schedule your 90 minute intake and you will complete the $300 deposit which covers both the consultation and the intake. I will send you intake paperwork to complete for that initial session. This paperwork will contain policy information and also will require credit card information for billing. Further personal history will be gathered on the intake paperwork. During our initial session we will review your paperwork, discuss the therapy intensive process, and build your treatment plan based on your goals. We will schedule your intensive and discuss payment options. Any other questions you may have can be answered during this intake as well.
If you are seeking an in-home intensive, we will assess your location and needs during the intake.
-
We will schedule the amount of time needed based on the incident or theme(s) you would like to address during your therapy intensive. During the therapy process, we will have specific targets to seek out and reduce reactivity and resolve symptoms over several hours or days. This process will include EMDR protocol, parts-work meditations and exploration, as well as other therapeutic modalities as needed. We will have breaks as requested and at certain marks, depending on the length of your intensive.
During therapy, you have full control to stop or limit the focus of our chosen targets.
-
Post-intensive, it is encouraged that you journal, exercise, meditate, and practice healthy coping skills in order to fully integrate the experience and reflect on the knowledge you have gained and the changes in your life you are seeking. All intensives include a follow-up 60 minute session in office or via telehealth in order to check in on your progress and determine if further therapy intensives could be useful. You may also be encouraged to continue or engage with traditional weekly therapy.
Is a therapy intensive right for you?
Dr. Adare Toral provides EMDR, Parts-work, and Somatic intensives for adults who have experienced a traumatic incident such as sexual assault, relationship violence, traumatic accidents, or other recent, single-incident traumatic experiences.
Therapy intensives are also for clients who have repeated traumas in childhood, themes of traumatic experiences, or specific negative beliefs about themselves.
If you are unsure whether a therapy intensive is a good fit, please contact us to discuss options.
Therapy intensives can be helpful for repeated traumas within a “theme.”
Sexual violation due to multiple instances of sexual abuse or assault
Feeling unsafe due to multiple instances of stalking, domestic violence, or childhood abuse
Feeling responsible for everyone due to multiple instances of traumatic caretaking or negative experiences at work
This is not an exhaustive list. Please contact us if you would like to learn more about how traumatic themes may apply to your therapy intensive
Therapy intensives can be helpful for negative core beliefs or shame thoughts. Some of these can be heard in our minds as “I’m not good enough,” “I’m a bad person,” “I am not worthy of…,” or “My value is determined by others.”
This is not an exhaustive list of negative thinking and shame experiences. Please contact us if you would like to learn more about how negative core beliefs may apply to your therapy intensive

Intensives FAQs and Policies
-
Therapy intensives are short-term, high-impact therapy sessions. An intensive is 90 minutes or more of concentrated therapy for specific concerns. EMDR intensives focus on identified traumatic incidents, themes, or thoughts in order to provide relief quickly. Parts-work intensives may utilize EMDR, but they focus on understanding and integrating the various parts of ourselves. EMDR intensives may incorporate parts-work as well, but EMDR focuses on reducing reactivity to memories, thoughts, or experiences. Both parts-work and EMDR may utilize somatic exploration of body sensations or movement.

Feel free to email, call, text, or submit a contact form in order to schedule a consultation call. If we determine that a therapy intensive would be effective for you, a deposit is required to schedule an intake session. The initial $300 deposit covers your 90-minute intake and consultation.
In-office intensives take place in San Luis Obispo. Online intensives can be conducted anywhere in California. In-home intensives can be conducted anywhere in California following the initial intake and assessment of in-home accessibility.
-
A deposit of $300 is required for all intensives. This initial deposit is non-refundable and covers a 15 minute consult call and initial 90 minute intake. A $5 processing fee will be added to your deposit via square. If it is determined that an intensive is not the best option, you will not be charged further. If an intensive is scheduled, half the cost is due at the time of booking, with the remaining cost charged at the time of the intensive.
If you have to cancel the intensive for any reason, a 48-hour notice is required to avoid being charged in full for your missed appointment.
