Therapy for Teens and College Students
In San Luis Obispo and Across California
Helping Students Navigate School, Stress, and Independence
Between navigating the academic intensity of SLO high schools or the expectations of Cal Poly and Cuesta, managing friendships, and facing the constant pressure of "what comes next," it’s easy to feel like you’re drowning in a sea of expectations.
Whether you are a San Luis Obispo high school student trying to balance college prep with your social life, or a Cal Poly student feeling the weight of university and independence, the "best years of your life" can often feel like a blur of anxiety, depression, or a replay of past traumas. Perhaps the weight of it all makes even the simplest tasks feel impossible. You don’t have to carry that weight alone, and you definitely don’t have to have it all figured out right now.
Therapy is a place where you can put it all down and find yourself. We’ll work together to move from a place of constant reactivity, where every stressor feels like a crisis, to a place of calm. We can create a toolbox of coping skills and learn to be objective, nonjudgmental, and effective in communication, school, and life.
Trauma-Focused Therapy in San Luis Obispo and Across California
When anxiety, depression, or the pressure to be perfect reaches a tipping point, it can feel like your emotions are in the driver's seat, and you're just along for the ride. You might notice yourself trapped in a cycle of "all-or-nothing" reactions or feel “emotionally hijacked.” Together, we can find the balance between accepting who you are in this moment and developing the concrete skills to change the patterns that are no longer serving you.
DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy)
DBT is a therapeutic modality that focuses on mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Between the pressure of grades, the social minefield of school life, and the constant hum of "Am I doing enough?", it is incredibly easy to feel overwhelmed by your own emotions. DBT gives you a concrete set of skills to handle those moments when your feelings feel like a 10/10. DBT allows you to build resilience for when life gets chaotic, the confidence to set boundaries with friends or family, and the ability to turn down the volume on that internal critic so you can actually enjoy your life.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR is a somatic therapy that addresses traumatic memories. Sometimes, our most difficult experiences get "stuck" in the nervous system, feeling just as raw and intense today as the day they happened. This is why you might feel a sudden surge of panic or a wave of "not good enough" even when you know, logically, that you are safe. EMDR is a specialized tool that helps your brain take a traumatic memory, and store it differently so it becomes less distressing. The weight you’ve been carrying doesn’t have to be there forever. Together, we can create a path toward a life that feels lighter, calmer, and entirely your own.
